Food giant Monsanto has taken steps to keep their genetically modified organisms (GMO) foods in manufactured products and make sure a labeling system doesn’t take effect.
Since the creation of GMO many health officials and health conscience citizens have advocated the labeling of all foods that contain GMOs. This labeling system would have a detrimental effect on Monsanto’s profit margins and influence in the food industry.
“You might as well put a skull and cross bones on food products that contain labels claiming they are made with GMOs” says natural news website wake-upworld.com
Genetically modified organisms are organisms that have been altered on the genetic level to produce desirable characteristics as they grow to maturity.
Seed corporation Monsanto has created a corn seed that is resistant to its pesticide Round Up, therefore the chemical can be sprayed over the entire plant without fear the chemical will kill the plant, instead of just the weeds around it.
GMOs appear in everything from potatoes, soybeans and milk to growth hormones for meat.
GMOs, praised for their solution to food shortage and ability to resist weeds, have grown in popularity. However, the majority of the public remains severely uneducated about the dangers of GMOs.
Not only harmful for human consumption, GMOs have a detrimental effect on the environment.
Ground water contamination of increasingly potent pesticides and even the questionable chemical composition of the food we eat that contains GMO’s are only a few of the health concerns. They have been connected to organ damage and increasing evidence shows GMOs’ link to other health issues and cancer.
Foods containing GMO’s are permitted by the USDA to be sold under the label “natural.”
The store manager at Town and Country foods on 19th said that labeling all foods that contain GMO is unrealistic due to the sheer amount of foods affected and the willingness of manufactures to disclaim GMO ingredients
Recently executives from Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm have surrendered to Monsanto, admitting they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of genetically engineered crop alfalfa.
GE alfalfa will be unregulated and allowed to be used wherever needed, putting GMO’s in the diet of cattle, poultry, and fertilizer.
This public display of defeat shows how far Monsanto will push for GMO integration.
Corporations like Monsanto have a heavy influence on politics, government and what goes into our food.
The industry undermines public health, destroys biodiversity, damages the environment and destabilizes the climate.
In the European Union there are almost no GMO crops being cultivated and all foods containing GMO’s are labeled.
The consumers must demand that food companies label their food accordingly for the health and environment of future generations.
